A tribunal recently help in Australia looked into the sexual abuse of children. The stories that came forward are not only staggering in number but in detail. The offences covered all denominations of religion and the perpetrators ranged from priests to teachers, and carers. No one, it seems, is above victimisation if a child is in the right place at the right time for a predator to take advantage.
Sometimes there are multiple predators who may target one or more victims in a class or orphanage. The latter have seen many children who are already suffering used by men to satisfy their sexual urges or perversions.
The children in those situations are probably already lonely and longing for adult company, as they are away from their normal family home. This is an opening for such an adult to gain favour. If a priest or a teacher, he can grant favours and offer advantages for which an innocent person might easily fall.
No matter what the child’s circumstances are they don’t warrant this kind of criminal behaviour. While the Tribunal heard from hundreds who have been molested the biggest surprise was how many were in expensive private schools at the time.
Vulnerable victims in that case may include children who are in broken homes and feeling the horror of divorce. A sympathetic ear or an impartial adult is a likely shoulder to lean on and predators don’t miss opportunities to strike.
Some of these cases involved children of single mums who worked hard to give their sons a good education. As it is mostly males who are affected in the latter situation the boys would be reluctant to say anything to their mothers about such an event. Feeling they are the ‘man’ of the family keeping such a thing to themselves has done enormous damage.
While the courts are now struggling to hear the multitude of cases against predators many are settled privately. This mostly happens where the private schools need to protect their reputations. Meanwhile ever more claims of sexual abuse are coming to the fore.
